You are the Average of the 5 People You Hang Out with the Most

There's a saying that says you are the average of the 5 people you hang out with the most. While I don't feel that is always 100% accurate, I do think that there is a bit of truth in the statement.

I used to have a co-worker who was a great guy. Super funny and nice guy but he had some pretty serious mood swings. When he was down in the dumps and bitching about the job, I found myself thinking “yeah this does suck, I hate this job”.

His negativity wore off on me and my performance suffered because it.

Could I chose to have blocked his thoughts out? Sure, but instead I focused my energy on what he was dwelling on.

I suggest to think about who are the people in your life that you hang out with the most often? Do they have the qualities that you enjoy in people? Are the predominately happy, enjoyable people? Are they successful and working towards bettering themselves or do they focus on negativity and things bring themselves and you down?

While it may be bold to say to cut the negative people loose from your life completely (hey some people just have a bad day from time to time and that is ok), I would suggest hanging out with other more positive people more often.
