Dealing with Our Inner Demons

After a somewhat lazy Sunday afternoon at home I found myself watching the T.V show Hoarder's : Buried Alive. I've seen this show a few times and it always blows me away that people can live like this.

Looking past the fact that it is incredibly disgusting to live in an area over crowded with various odds and ends or in the case of the man in the episode I watched, a house full to the rafters with trash. Old food, boxes and boxes and crap, clothes, tools, and random things everywhere. He was literally building up walls of trash around himself. So much so that he lived outside in his yard because he had no liveable space inside.

Now I'm no psychologist, nor do I play one on TV, but I would guess that 9 times out of 10, these people are like this because of deep rooted issues from their past. Common stories of mental, physical or verbal abuse have scarred them deeply and they've fail to deal with these issues, pushing them deeper and deeper into their subconscious to the point of isolation and removal from society.

What I'm saying is just me talking out of my ass, but if I was a betting man, I would be willing to be that most of us have something that is holding us back from success or opening up to true, genuine relationships.

Your own issues might not be as extreme as the guy on Hoarders (I sure as heck hope not), but I think it is fair to say that each of us have little voices on our heads that at times challenge us on what we can achieve and hold us back from realizing our true potential.

As difficult as it might be to bring these issues to light and release them from our psyche, we need to let them out. I recommend talking to someone you trust. Your best friend, your spouse, your dog or if it is more extreme then seeking out professional help via councillor or psychologist. Sometimes, just the act of acknowledging your thoughts is enough to start on the road to healing. Other more serious issues may take months or years. Regardless of which camp you are in (if at all), you deserve to rid yourself of your inner demons.

When we are striving for happiness and success, we need to be at peace with ourselves and not just block out our inner voices that hold us back, but to remove them completely.

Dealing with these issues and removing any self doubts is the best way to live a fulfilling and truly happy life. You deserve it.
